Kissama National Park

Gazetted as a National Park on January 11 1957, Kissama (QuiçamaNational Park is one of the world’s largest natural reserves. It is located 70km south of the capital Luanda, Bengo Province in north-western Angola and stretches over an area of 12,000 sq km. Kissama Park is one of Southern Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles to experience with a wide-ranging spectrum of wildlife.

Kissama National Park, once a hunting reserve is a great spot for wildlife safaris in Angola. Dwarf Forest Buffalos, Roan Antelopes, Elands, Lions, Elephants, Waterbucks, as well as the Manatee and Sea Turtles have been sighted in Quiçama but only an extensive game count will provide a reliable estimate. Tourists are also guaranteed the sight of African Giraffes, Kudus, Ostriches, Blue Wildebeests, Zebras, Bushbucks and Grey Duikers.

Owing to its beautiful natural habitat, Kissama National Park abounds an imposing amount of birdlife. Some of the common birds to spot include the Red-crested Turaco, Angola Batis, Bubbling Cisticola, Red-backed Mousebird, White-fronted Wattle-eye, Golden-backed Bishop, Rufous-tailed Palm Thrush and Pale-olive Greenbul. The rare Gabela Helmetshrike occurs mostly in the remote south-east of the park. The Park also offers one of the best sites to see the endemic Grey-striped Francolin. However, birding is spectacular for the most part of the year.
