Ahaggar National Park

Established in 1987, Ahaggar National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Algeria. It stretches over an area of approximately 450,000 sq km in the Saharan Algeria Region in the extreme south of the country. It is state-owned and protected.

The Ahaggar Mountains

The Ahaggar Mountains also known as the Hoggar are a highland region located in central Sahara about 1,500 km south of Algiers. It’s composed largely of rugged extinct volcanoes and summit of naked rock with complex of eroded volcanic crater plugs 155miles in diameter. The highest peak, Tahat lies at 2,919m. Regions surrounding the mountains experience sporadic rains, extreme dry conditions and variable temperatures ranging between 10º F in the evenings and 100 º F during the day. Winter temperatures may go below 0°C. Despite these extreme conditions, the Ahaggar region is a prime tourist destination especially the Assekrem point for the hikers.
