The Republic of the Congo, also known as Congo-Brazzaville is a country located in the central-western part of sub-Saharan Africa along the Equator in Central Africa. It is bounded by four countries; Gabon to the west, Cameroon and the Central African Republic to the north, and the Angolan exclave province of Cabinda to the southwest and east of it is the Democratic Republic of Congo It has a short Atlantic coast.
The capital, Brazzaville, is located on the Congo River, in the south of the country, immediately across from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The southwest of the country is a coastal plain for which the primary drainage is the Kouilou-Niari River; the interior of the country consists of a central plateau between two basins to the south and north. Forests are under increasing exploitation pressure.

This former French colony boasts a rich landscape of falls, swamps and rapids, with the northern country distinguished by huge tracts of virgin forest and an abundance of wildlife. The forest is also home to several indigenous tribes who have maintained their traditional way of life. The narrow sandy coastal plain is broken by lagoons, behind which rise the Mayombe Mountains.
