Ivory Coast or Côte d’Ivoire is a country of western sub-Saharan Africa in West Africa. It shares borders with Liberia and Guinea in the west, Burkina Faso and Mali in the north, Ghana in the east, and the Atlantic Ocean in the south.
The country covers an area of 322,460 sq km with a population standing at 20,617,068 million (2009 est.). Several local languages are spoken in the country including Baoulé, Dioula, Dan, Anyin and Cebaara Senufo; but French is the official language. Côte d’Ivoire became independent on 7 August 1960.
The main religions are Islam, Christianity (primarily Roman Catholic) and various indigenous religions.
