Lesotho

Lesotho is a tiny country in Southern Africa and landlocked within the Republic of South Africa. It used to be known as Basutoland when it was a British Protectorate. It is spectacularly scenic and has a large mountain range (part of the Drakensberg), forming most of its border. All of Lesotho consists of high mountainous terrain. Even the region that is referred to as the lowlands is over 1000 meters high. The main attraction of the country is its ruggedness and its people who in many cases still follow a traditional way of life.

The capital Maseru is a laid back place and a good starting point for exploring the country. Hikes and visits to the only national park of the country, Sehlabathebe national park can be arranged in the capital.

Lesotho is a small, landlocked country surrounded entirely by South Africa. The dramatic mountain nation of the Basotho people has an inimitable rural African atmosphere that is at once proud and warmly welcoming.

Ringed by mountains, Lesotho’s rugged landscape is one of the most beautiful and austere on the African continent. The entire country is more than a thousand metres above sea level; it is fittingly known as the Kingdom of the Sky. Out on the highlands, the sky is mindbogglingly enormous, and the air crisp and pure.

Hiking and pony–trekking are the two best ways to see the country’s lovely scenery (which is almost entirely free of fences) and experience the friendliness of its inhabitants.

Lesotho’s head of state is King Letsie III and its Prime Minister is Pakalitha Mosisili. Most of the Basotho still live traditional, simple lives in the foothills of their mountainous land. A journey and visit through Lesotho allow visitors to observe an African country that remains natural and uncontrived by tourism.

Lesotho is otherwise known as the Kingdom in the Sky, because of its high altitude and mountain peaks, Lesotho offers the traveller a different face of Africa, which is closer to alpine in climate, scenery and vegetation. Invigorating mountain air, spectacular panoramas and a rare birdlife combine to attract outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world.
