Linyanti Wildlife Reserve

Remote and inaccessible Linyanti Wildlife Reserve is bordered by the Linyanti River in the north and the Chobe National Park in the east. It consists of 125,000 hectares of the pristine wildlife area.  Linyanti River, from which the reserve derives its name, forms a natural border between Botswana and Namibia and on its southern banks, the Linyanti Reserve contains marshland and lagoons similar to the Okavango farther south. Two-thirds of the Savute Channel is situated within the reserve and starts in the Linyanti Swamps, meanders through the reserve, and ends at the Savute Marsh in the middle of Chobe National Park.

Wildlife at Linyanti

Thousands of zebra spend the winter around the Linyanti Swamp system before heading south to the Savuti in November in expectation of summer rains and good grazing. The main predators are Lion, Hyena, Leopard, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Serval and Bat Eared Foxes. There are high concentrations of Giraffe, Baboon, Vervet Monkey and Warthog. Antelope species include Wildebeest, Impala, Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Lechwe, Sable, Roan, Eland, and the Aquatic Sitatunga.

BirdLife of Linyanti

Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, due to its amazing bio-diversity and presence of Linyanti Swamps and Savute channel, has an excellent population of birds, resident and migrant. In total, some 350 species of birds can be found here including the African Skimmer, Hartlaub’s Babbler, Slaty Egret, Allen’s Gallinule and Wattled Crane. Others are Kori Bustard, Ostrich, Racket-tailed Roller, Secretary bird, Bennett’s Woodpecker, White-breasted Cuckoo-shrike, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Bradfield’s Hornbill and Arnott’s Chat. Birdlife along Linyanti River is particularly tremendous during the Green Season when the summer migrants are in the area. The Savute Channel is another hotspot with significant concentrations of the eagles and raptors. Ground Hornbill and Carmine Bee-eaters are common summer migrants. There are also various owl species to be seen here such as Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and African Scops-Owl. Night Game Drives: Night drives provide the opportunity to see nocturnal animals such as Bush Baby, Spring Hare, Aardwolf, Serval and Genet. If you are extremely lucky, you may also see the elusive Pangolin.
