Discovering Guinea
Guinea sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry is a country in West Africa. It shares with six countries; Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, and Mali in the north; and in the south with Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire). Niger River is the principal and dominant water body in the country and runs across the mainland eastwards.
The highest point in Guinea, Mount Nimba is over 1750 meters from the sea level. This mountain range is part of the Cote D’lvoire and Liberia. One can climb up the mountain or at least head up to the summit, which is easily accessible from the village of Gbakore. The mountain is quite steep and has winding trekking trails.

This is the closest island to Bissau and the main town, also called Bolama, has been a good illustration of fading colonial glory since 1941 when the capital was moved from here to Bissau. The beaches at the southwestern end of the island are reckoned to be the best. Down here you are going to have a paradise to yourself.
West of Bubaque is Ilha de Orango, which, along with several other islands, forms part of the Orango Islands National Park. To get there you will need to island-hop toward the village of Eticoga on the west coast, a good base from which to enter the park.
The vegetation is mainly palm groves and light woodland, with significant areas of mangrove and mudflats exposed at low tide. The park’s inhabitants include rare saltwater species of hippo and crocodile, and the area is particularly good for birds. This is also one of the largest green and Ridley turtle-nesting sites on the west African coast.
Jemberem is central to a community-based conservation project, the Cantanhez Natural Park. Initiated to protect birds, monkeys and chimpanzees (debate rages as to whether they exist in Guinea-Bissau ), the sacred forest is best navigated with a guide. You can arrange a tour through the local chief.
