Location

Libya is a Muslim country situated in North Africa. It is bounded six countries namely Egypt to the east; to the south-east by Sudan Chad and Algeria; and Tunisia to the west; Niger to the south and the Mediterranean Sea to the north.

Weather in Libya

Libya experiences two main types of climate, the Mediterranean along the coast and the desert climate in the rest of the country. The capital and the coastal regions in the north have a Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall. Summers are very hot and dry; winters are mild with cooler evenings. The desert has hot days and cold nights. However, the coastal regions in the summer experience moderate temperatures averaging at about 30°C. During spring, especially in April, along the coastline is warm brought by Ghibli, a dry wind which causes temperatures to go up. In winter, the average temperature in the desert areas is 8°C, which is cold in comparison to the coastal strip. Although it may seem to be sunny and warm in the desert, it gets rather chilly there at night. Semi-arid conditions dominate the central plains, while the southern deserts are subject to frequent periods of drought. Some 380 mm of rain falls predominantly throughout the winter season.

Getting Around

By Road: You can also get to Libya from Egypt, Tunisia or from the south of Libya. Roads are in good conditions, currently, there are some Car Rental agencies (at negotiable fares). You can also relay on Taxi and local transportation. Between the cities, you can take the Bus or rent your own Taxis, shared taxis are also available. There are bus services between Tripoli and Benghazi (14 hours) and other major urban areas. A minibus service operates from Benghazi to Tobruk. The buses make stops for meals and the very important tea breaks along the way.

By Air: There are various domestic flights between Tripoli, the capital and other major cities such as Sabratah, Ghat and Al Bayda. Jamahiriya Libyan Arab Airlines flies internally between Tripoli, Benghazi, Sebha, Al Bayda, Mersa Brega, Tobruk, Misratah, Ghadamis and Al Khufrah.

Passports and visas

Passports and visas are required for entry into Libya for all nationalities except nationals of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Travellers from countries outside the mentioned, to obtain a VISA, you need to apply to the nearest Libyan embassies. Visa application costs differ according to the country you apply from. Visas are usually valid for 3 months from the issue date.

Car Rental in Libya

Self-drive cars are available in Tripoli and Benghazi. Documentation: National driving licence valid for three months. After this time, a Libyan licence must be obtained. There are several car rental companies in Libya and they include ALMAGED CAR RENTAL, EUROPCAR, AVIS LTD and AL MUMTAZ CAR RENTAL. The charge fares from around £20 a day and they are best contacted through a travel agent.
